Previous studies of preschool children in the United States, Western Europe, and Eastern Asia have demonstrated a bias favouring the colour white relative to the colour black. In this study, procedures used in the Color Meaning Test II (CMT II) were translated and administered to 100 Malay-Malaysian preschoolers, aged 3 and 4 years. The Malay-Malaysian childrens mean CMT score of 14.6 compared to the theoretical mean of 12, indicates a slight pro-white/anti-black colour bias. However, the degree of colour bias among the Malay-Malaysian children was low compared to previous studies in other countries. Therefore, the study suggests that the intensity of pro-white/anti-black colour bias is influenced by attitudes toward black and white people. This study provides some support for claims that the pro-white/anti-black colour bias is universal and that main causal factors are early diurnal experiences and cultural symbolism.
